Sadness

Sadness alone can kill us. We have to be thankful for small things.” - Eli. Page 96, of Escaping Into the Night.

I agree with this quote and understand the part of where he said “Sadness alone can kill us” because if you’re sad and emotional, you’re just going to be thinking about all the negativity in your life and not be thinking of the things you have, and should be thankful for it because there's others that don't even have what you have that can help them survive even by just a little. And it can probably or will lead you to suicide possibly, because at one point you’re just not going to be able to take it all in and you’re gonna feel like you’ve had enough of it, that’s why you don't look at the bad side. So it’s good that Eli’s thinking that way.
This reminds me of how people, such as Tyler Clementi, feel hopeless because of bullying... and other teenagers on the news committing suicide because of bullying. They don't understand that there's people out there that love them, like their parents and friends. They just look at the bad stuff going around them, and start to feel hopeless and lonely, when they’re really not alone. I don't think bullying is right because no one deserves to be bullied, it doesn't matter what race they are or religion. And the victims that commit suicide may feel like they’re hopeless or lonely, but you just gotta keep you’re head up and do something about it. Take a stand for yourself.

  1. You make a perfect point and I couldn't say it any better. It reminds me of an old quote: "The past should be left in the past or it can steal your future. Live life for what tomorrow can bring and not what yesterday has taken away. Every day is a gift."

  2. Christian,

I am so moved by your writing and how you link the quote by Eli Wesel to the modern issue of bullying. It can be so difficult to find hope sometimes and Eli is right - sadness can kill as you mention in your comparison to suicide. I also read your writing and Eil's quote and thought of the idea that sadness can take over a brain, making it difficult for a person to see those that love them and care for them. When all they see is that sadness, it has to be so hard.

Keep up your efforts, Christian! You are a powerful thinker!

  3. I completely agree. We should be grateful for the small thing because sometimes the big thing aren't as important as the small things. The small things are sometimes more meaningful. Always being a pessimism could make you want to do the worst. Being sad is the worst. your always thinking about bad things. Sadness takes over everything.

  4. I really like this quote because it's so true! People let other things bring them down and they end up doing something they'll regret. They never think about the good things that have happened to them. Like the example you used about bullying, people let others get to them and sometimes people commit suicide because they don't know how to deal with it. I really do believe that sadness can kill us. I also believe that people should let it happen. The ones that do let it happen are the ones that give up and giving up is NEVER and option. Sadness is very powerful and can do big things. It's better to think about the small things that have made you happy.
